Fathead minnow, Pimephales promelas

The fathead minnow is found in cool to warm aquatic habitats throughout eastern and northern North America.

Its native range in Colorado includes all drainage basins except the Colorado River, where it has been introduced.

It is found in most streams and lakes and is especially common in environments where predaceous fishes are rare.

Fathead minnows eat a variety of plant and animal matter. Because of its general habitat requirements and hardy nature, it is a common bait fish.

Maximum Length: 3-4 inches (7.5-10 cm).
