History of the Colorado-Big Thompson Project

The Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District administers the delivery of Colorado-Big Thompson (C-BT) water to cities such as Ft. Collins, Boulder, Greeley, Longmont, and Loveland.

The Colorado-Big Thompson Project, constructed from 1938-1957, is the largest transmountain diversion project in the state.

C-BT provides supplemental water to 29 cities and towns, over 100 ditch and reservoir companies, and 620,000 acres of irrigated farmland.

The project consists of 4 power plants, 12 reservoirs, 35 miles of tunnels, 95 miles of canals, and 700 miles of transmission lines.

Approximately 230,000 acre-feet of water are delivered annually through the C-BT system.
