Johnny darter, Etheostoma, nigrum

Darters are in the same family as the larger yellow perch and walleye.

The Johnny darter is widely distributed throughout Canada and the upper mid-western United States and reaches its western-most extent in the North and South Platte rivers in Colorado.

Populations in Colorado occur in foothill areas and are primarily associated with clear, small- to medium-sized streams and canals.

Johnny darters are inconspicuous but present in several high mountain reservoirs.

This species, and most other darters, live on the bottom and are found in riffles, runs, and pools with sand to cobble-sized substrates.

Small bottom-dwelling invertebrates are the primary food of Johnny darters.

Maximum Length: 3 inches (7.5 cm).
