Lake trout (Mackinaw)

Image of a lake trout

Lake trout are native to Alaska, Canada, and the Great Lakes region.

Lake trout spawn at night in the fall over large cobble and boulder substrates.

Small trout feed on plankton and insects and larger trout consume other fish.

Lake trout may live 20 years.

This fish has a white, irregular spotting pattern on a dark body. Unlike other trout, they have a deeply indented tail fin.

Maximum length: 12-48 inches.
