Longnose sucker, Catostomus catostomus

The longnose sucker is the only member of its family with populations in both North America and Asia.

The most widespread sucker of northern North America, this species is native to the eastern slope of Colorado. It has been inadvertently introduced into headwater streams and impoundments of the Colorado River drainage in Colorado and Wyoming.

It is common in both lakes and rivers with cold or warm water, often sharing habitat with the white sucker.

Breeding males and females have a reddish band on the sides of their bodies.

The longnose sucker is typically a bottom feeder, consuming primarily aquatic invertebrates.

Maximum Length: 20-30 cm (51-76 cm).
