Orangethroat darter, Etheostoma spectabile

The orangethroat darter is widespread in the central lowlands of the United States and reaches its western extent in Colorado.

This species is found in Colorado only near the extreme eastern border in the Arikaree and Republican river basins.

The orangethroat darter is generally found in small, clear, spring-fed streams with sand and gravel substrates but is sometimes tolerant of warmer, more turbid environments.

Orangethroat darters reproduce in spring and summer and males are often bright blue and orange during the spawning season.

This species feeds primarily on aquatic invertebrates.

Maximum Length: 2.5 inches (6.5 cm)
