Steps for Releasing Fish
- Returning fish to the water alive is not as simple as it sounds. Follow these steps to ensure the best chance of survival for the fish:
Do not play any fish to total exhaustion.
Keep the fish in the water as much as possible when handling and removing the hook.
Remove the hook gently--do not squeeze the fish or place your fingers in its gills.
If deeply hooked--cut the line--do not pull the hook out.
Release the fish only after its equilibrium is maintained. If necessary, gently hold the fish facing upstream and move the fish slowly back and forth. Release the fish in quiet water.
If the fish is tagged, report the tag number and color to the Colorado Division of Wildlife, (303) 248-7175.
Fines up to $100,000 are possible for willfully destroying endangered fish.
