Rio Grande sucker

This small sucker is found in the Upper Rio Grande River basins of New Mexico and Colorado and into disjunct areas in Mexico.

Most Colorado populations have been eliminated through habitat degradation and hybridization or competition with the white sucker.

This species resides in riffles, runs, and pools in small-to medium-sized, clear streams.

Rio Grande suckers eat plant and animal matter scraped from rocks.

Males in spring spawning colors are jet black above, white below, and have a red lateral band.

Maximum length: 6-8 inches.
