Most Colorado populations have
been eliminated through habitat degradation and hybridization or competition with the white
sucker.
This species resides in riffles, runs, and pools in small-to medium-sized, clear streams.
Rio Grande suckers eat plant and animal matter scraped from rocks.
Males in spring
spawning colors are jet black above, white below, and have a red lateral band.
Maximum length: 6-8 inches.
