River carpsucker, Carpiodes carpio


The river carpsucker is found throughout the Mississippi River Valley and Gulf coast streams of the United States.

In Colorado, it is restricted to plains reaches of the South Platte and Arkansas rivers.

This bottom-dwelling river species inhabits deep, quiet runs and pools over sand and silt substrates.

River carpsuckers also occur in reservoirs. Their diet consists of invertebrates and organic matter.

Maximum Length: 14-18" (36-45 cm).
