Surface Water Quality Standards
Site-specific standards and classifications have been established for the following basins:
Arkansas River Basin
Upper Colorado River Basin and North Platte River
San Juan River and Dolores River Basins
Gunnison and Lower Dolores River Basins
Rio Grande River Basin
Lower Colorado River Basin
South Platte River Basin, Laramie River Basin, Republican River Basin, and Smoky Hill River Basin
There are three potential approaches to the adoption of site-specific numeric standards:
The numerical standards set forth in "The Basic Standards and Methodologies for Surface Water" are applied in most circumstances.
Standards based on the existing in-stream quality may be adopted where natural or irreversible pollutant levels are higher than would generally be allowed, but are determined adequate to protect classified uses.
Site-specific-criteria-based standards can be implemented when a site-specific analysis indicates that alternative numeric standards are appropriate for the protection of classified uses.
